Marine Technology NewsCompact 2,000 m electric ROV from Saab Seaeye for offshore inspection and light work.
The Cougar-XTi is a compact electric remotely operated vehicle from Saab Seaeye, rated to 2,000 m and widely used for offshore inspection, drilling support and light intervention. Six powerful thrusters let the 435 kg vehicle hold position in strong currents while it carries cameras, sonar, manipulators and tools such as cutters and cleaning brushes. Pilots get automatic heading and depth, with station keeping available when a navigation sensor is fitted. It is an updated version of the long-running Cougar-XT, one of the most common observation-class ROVs at sea.
1,515 mm long, 1,000 mm wide and 790 mm high, about 435 kg in air with an 80 kg payload. Six 500 VDC thrusters (four horizontal, two vertical) give 170 kgf forward, 120 kgf lateral and 110 kgf vertical thrust. It can operate free-swimming or with a Type 8 tether management system. The Cougar-XTi is a development of the Cougar-XT, which the Royal New Zealand Navy and many offshore operators use.
