Overview

Chinese underwater glider family that set a gliding depth record of 6,329 m in the Mariana Trench.

Haiyi, or Sea-Wing, is a family of underwater gliders developed by the Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Like other gliders it changes buoyancy and uses swept wings to travel slowly for long periods, measuring temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll, and turbidity. In 2017 a deep-rated Haiyi reached 6,329 m in the Mariana Trench, a record for an underwater glider at the time, and Haiyi gliders have been deployed in large fleets in the South China Sea and in the Arctic. Such gliders are also of naval interest for long-term ocean sensing.

Notes

Developed by the Shenyang Institute of Automation. In March 2017 a Haiyi glider reached 6,329 m in the Mariana Trench during 12 dives over about 130 km in four days; an earlier Haiyi-7000 reached 5,751 m in 2016. Torpedo-shaped hull with swept wings; also deployed in the Arctic.
