Overview

Reconfigurable three-hull hovering AUV from IQUA Robotics and the University of Girona.

GIRONA 500 is a hovering autonomous underwater vehicle developed at the University of Girona in Spain and sold by spin-off company IQUA Robotics. Its three-hull layout keeps it stable enough to hold position, so it can carry not only survey sonars and cameras but also robotic arms for grabbing and manipulating objects. That makes it one of the standard platforms used in research on autonomous underwater intervention.

Notes

Developed at the University of Girona's CIRS lab and licensed to IQUA Robotics. Three hulls, 1.5 m long, 1 m high, 0.3 m hull diameter; weight from about 140 kg (under 200 kg depending on payload). Rated to 500 m, with a 2.9 kWh lithium-ion battery giving more than 6 hours. 35 L of payload volume takes multibeam sonars, stereo cameras, pan-tilt units or a dual-arm manipulator for intervention. Runs the COLA2 software architecture and is a common research platform for underwater intervention.
