AI-enabled underwater glider from European defence-AI company Helsing for persistent, large-scale submarine detection.
SG-1 Fathom is an underwater glider from Helsing, the Munich-based defence-AI company, designed to put thousands of low-cost acoustic sensors into contested seas. The vehicle is about 2 m long, 28 cm in diameter, and weighs around 60 kg. Instead of a propeller it changes buoyancy and uses wings to glide at one to two knots, which keeps it quiet and lets it stay out for up to about three months, either moving through the water column or resting on the seabed as a listening node. Each glider runs Helsing's Lura software, a large acoustic model trained on decades of sonar data, to detect and classify submarines and other contacts on board. Gliders are rail-launched from shore or ships and coordinated as a fleet. They are built in Plymouth, England, and Helsing completed integrated sea trials in July 2025.
