MBARI's 4,000 m work-class science ROV, which has made more than 1,400 dives since 2009.
Doc Ricketts is the deep-diving remotely operated vehicle of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, named after the marine biologist Ed Ricketts. Since 2009 it has made well over a thousand dives to as deep as 4,000 m, filming deep-sea animals, collecting rocks and specimens, and placing instruments on the seafloor off California and beyond. The hydraulic work-class vehicle weighs nearly five tonnes and is flown by pilots aboard MBARI's flagship research ship. Its cameras have recorded many of MBARI's best-known deep-sea discoveries, including the octopus nursery on Davidson Seamount.
