Visão geral

Scripps' long-endurance underwater glider used for decades of continuous ocean monitoring off California and in western boundary currents.

Spray is an autonomous underwater glider developed at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with Woods Hole and used for some of the longest continuous ocean records collected by robots. About 2 m long and 50 kg, it pumps oil between internal and external bladders to change buoyancy, gliding in a sawtooth path between the surface and about 1,000 m at 25-35 cm/s. Primary lithium batteries give missions of three to five months. Its antennas are built into the wings, and at each surfacing it uses GPS and Iridium to report data and receive commands. Scripps has flown Spray gliders along the California Current lines for decades and across the Gulf Stream and other boundary currents, measuring temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll, currents, and pH for climate and fisheries research.

Notas

Scripps describes Spray as about 2 m long and 50 kg, profiling between the surface and 1,000 m on typical missions of 3-5 months, moving at about 25-35 cm/s on 18-25 degree glide angles with primary lithium batteries and a hydraulic buoyancy pump. Developed by Scripps and Woods Hole; antennas are built into the wings.
