Ikhtisar
The NOC's famous Boaty McBoatface family of deep-rated long-range AUVs for multi-week, ship-independent ocean and polar research.
Autosub Long Range is the National Oceanography Centre's deep-ocean AUV family, best known publicly through the vehicle named Boaty McBoatface. The approximately 3.5 m, 800 kg ALR6000 can dive to 6,000 m and travel about 2,000 km, enabling multi-week missions across abyssal, under-ice, and storm-exposed environments that would otherwise require extensive research-ship time. While surfaced it uses Iridium to report status, transmit selected data, and receive mission changes. Boaty's distinctive name brought unusual public recognition to a serious research platform used to study Antarctic bottom water, climate processes, marine protected areas, gas seepage, and deep-ocean ecosystems.

Catatan
Boaty McBoatface is the public name carried by one Autosub Long Range vehicle, not a separate model. NOC publishes 2,000 km range and 6,000 m depth for ALR6000; engineering material gives approximately 3.5 m length, 800 kg mass, and roughly 1 m/s top speed.
