Descripción general

Canadian 5,000 m science ROV run on a not-for-profit basis for researchers worldwide.

ROPOS, the Remotely Operated Platform for Ocean Sciences, is a deep-sea robot run by the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility in British Columbia, which rents it with its pilots to scientists from many countries. Adapted from an industrial work-class vehicle, it is rated to 5,000 m and weighs about 3.4 tonnes, with two manipulators and room for sampling gear. ROPOS has studied hydrothermal vents and deep corals and installed equipment for the cabled seafloor observatory off the US Pacific Northwest. It travels between expeditions and works from whichever research ship a project charters.

Notas

40 hp electro-hydraulic work-class ROV, 3.05 x 1.64 x 2.17 m and 3,393 kg in air, with five Sub-Atlantic thrusters and a 2.5 kn top speed. Rated to 5,000 m but usually configured for 1,000 m or 4,000 m work. Operated by the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility on a user-pay basis; it has installed and serviced equipment for the US Ocean Observatories Initiative's cabled seafloor array.
