Descripción general

Indian autonomous surface vessel that sailed 1,500 km from Mumbai to Thoothukudi without human intervention.

Matangi is a 12 m autonomous surface vessel developed by Mumbai-based Sagar Defence Engineering and one of India's most visible maritime-autonomy demonstrators. In late 2024 it set out from Mumbai and sailed about 1,500 km to Thoothukudi on India's southeastern coast without human intervention, using its indigenous Genesis AI navigation and collision-avoidance software, as part of the Indian Navy-supported Sagarmala Parikrama mission. The vessel fuses cameras, radar, sonar, and LiDAR for perception and relies on AI and machine-learning algorithms for path planning. Its open payload bay can be reconfigured for coastal and seabed surveys, carrying sonar equipment, or electronic-warfare missions. Sagar Defence also supplies weaponised autonomous swarm boats to the Indian Navy.
